You Shall Not Pass
The January 6 coup attempt two years ago still has me bothered. The coup was successful in that the mob eventually took control of Congress by literally occupying both the House and Senate. I believe that Trump was waiting for a signal to declare martial law. That’s not out of the question. The idea was being floated openly … General Michael Flynn, Paul Gosar, Chief-of-Staff Mark Meadows, etc. Then-acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller – recent Director of National Counter Terrorism - should be investigated for not deploying the National Guard until three hours after the coup began. And his failure to approve the deployment of the DC Metropolitan Police requested by Mayor Muriel Bowser. The DC Metro Police SWAT finally subdued and cleared the Capitol.
Col. Earl Matthews, who was serving as the top lawyer for the D.C. National Guard, singled out two generals - Charles A. Flynn (brother of Gen. Charles Flynn) and Walter E. Piatt - for continuing to oppose a deployment even after Chief Steven A. Sund of the Capitol Police had made an urgent call for backup.
Trump had been signaling all along that he was not committing to a peaceful transfer of power when asked by the press if he would leave office.
FBI information on an imminent attack on the Capitol to obstruct the certification of Biden’s election was not passed along to Capitol Police.
No investigation of these people and possible criminal charges; just low-level thugs. I’d like to know if Mike Pompeo - CIA Director and later Secretary of State under Trump – was an orchestrator.
Where were the Joint-Chiefs-of-Staff? Ready to take control when martial law was declared?
Liz Cheney, third most powerful woman in House, knew nothing of the plan?
I believe we came close to loosing our democracy, or republic whichever is preferred. But this is where we are going … I don’t think it’s over.
Authoritarianism, fascist or otherwise, means the suppression of civil liberties, human rights and the glorification of the state. The human person will be subsumed to the power of the state. In fascist circles this means the dictates of the capitalist class and the power elite. A Hitler-like world is ready to go. For a look at the similarities between the rise of Nazi Germany and what is taking place here in the US, I recommend this documentary, “What neo-Nazis Inherited from Original Nazism,” DW Documentary, YouTube (42:25).
So, the January 6 House Committee investigations forwarded their recommendations to Attorney General Merrick Garland. December 20, 2022, the committee concluded that former president Donald Trump in guilty of the following felonies: Obstruction of an official proceeding; Conspiracy to defraud the United States; Conspiracy to make a false statement; and Conspiracy to defraud the United States by assisting, aiding or comforting those involved in the insurrection.
The Department of Justice now has the task of acting on these recommendations, or not. Albeit, an eventual conviction of Trump which would undermine his announced candidacy for president, or some other candidate from the Republican Party such as Ron DeSantis, makes no difference. The force of fascism, at the current time, has a life of its own.
Besides Trump, the investigations need to be extended. I believe Trump was simply a puppet.
And …
Eugene
Goodman pictured above saved democracy. If it wasn’t for this man, leading
the coup thugs away from the Senate chambers, we’d be a different country
today, one that might necessitate a change of address.
